CONCESSIONS HELP NEEDED

The PTO still needs help with concessions inventory and games for next year (typically a 2-year commitment - only in the Fall).

Concessions are a valuable service as well as an important source of revenue for the PTO and Clubs that work the booth. If this role remains unfilled, Concessions will be at risk and the PTO may have to reduce our operating budget. Please help!

If you are interested in supporting your school or learning more, please email our Concession Manager, Johnny Johnson, at jlj.johnson@aol.com .

THANK YOU FOR GETTING INVOLVED SO THE PTO CAN KEEP DOING THESE ACTIVITIES FOR OUR SCHOOL AND STUDENTS!

______

Highlights from our April PTO Meeting:

  • Ms. Vomhof, BVNW Principal, discussed District budget cuts, impact on our school and PTO needs. Her presentation is attached HERE.
  • The PTO discussed increasing teacher stipends and possibly increasing academic and activity grants next year to help lessen the impact of budget cuts.
  • Membership fees and suggested Invest in NW grant donation amounts on ParentVue will remain the same for 2026-27: $50 each. Parents who are able to are encouraged to donate additional funds to Invest in NW which goes directly to the Grant pool.
  • Yard Sign costs have increased so the price will increase to $75 starting on July 1st with placards increasing to $25 each.
  • Parents of graduating seniors will be incentivized to donate their Yard Signs and placards back to the PTO in exchange for a $10 gift card from one of our local partners (Bahama Ice, Chatime Boba Tea or Chick-Fil-A). Email BVNWPTO@gmail.com for pickup. Recycled Yard Signs will be re-sold for $35 each.
  • Over 75% of survey respondents supported using the PTO long-term carryover funds to replace the Husky mascot statue with a larger, bronze version. These funds were earmarked for a capital improvement project (NOT part of our operating budget).
  • This summer, the PTO will reach out to alumni first then BVNW families regarding contributions to close the project cost gap. Click HERE for more information and to contribute.
District Updates

Our new District Superintendent, Dr. Chapman, recently updated PTO Presidents on Kansas legislation and budget cut impacts. Key points are below:

Kansas Legislation Impacting BV

The current legislative decisions did not go the way District leadership wanted. Desired funding for public schools was not addressed. Instead, approved legislation included a new bell-to-bell no cell phone policy, a requirement for students to pass a civics test to graduate and a requirement for schools to prevent student walk-outs for protests. These are costly and complex, if not next to impossible, to implement. The cell phone policy alone would cost the District an additional $3.5-4m in capital to implement and require additional staff supervision complexity and time.

Impact of Budget Cuts

Ms. Chapman explained that District budget cuts are caused by decreasing student enrollment (down 3.4%) and lack of reimbursement for special education costs as mandated by the State of Kansas (BV has been using their reserves to bridge the gap). To achieve the budget reductions the District is investigating: not back-filling open positions, cancelling classes with enrollment less than 18 students, eliminating 5th grade strings, increasing school fees and closing schools for the summer to save on staff and utilities. They are also re-organizing SPED support - the fastest growing population of students in Blue Valley - as well as using District offices - vs classrooms - for some support classes such as ESL.

What can parents do to support Blue Valley?

Ms. Chapman and the Board of Education urge parents to write your Kansas representatives and tell them what you think about the new legislation and about the intent to rework (and most likely reduce) the state funding formula. Then get out and VOTE! Kansas legislators will be up for re-election this Fall and the District urges you to vote for reps that have proven their support of public schools. Finally, VOTE NO on the judge constitutional amendment to avoid stacking the court with justices who will oppose school funding at mandated levels.
